Epithelial Tissue
Cards
Simple Squamous Epithelium
single layer of flat cells, centrally located nucleus
lines heart,blood vessels
Filtration, diffusion
Simple cuboidal epithelium
single layer of cube-shaped cell, centrally located nucleus
covers surface of ovary, lines anterior surface of capsule of the lens of the eye
secretion and absorption
Nonciliated simple columnar epithlium
single layer of nonciliated column-like cells with nuclei newar base of cells, contains goblet cells and cells with microvilli in some locations
lines GI tract, ducts of many glands
secretion and absorption
Ciliated simpe columnar epithlium
single layer of ciliated column-like cells with nuclei near base, contains goblet cells in some location
lines some bronchioles,uterine tubes
moves mucus and other substances by ciliary action
Pseudostratified columnar elpithelium
not a true stratified, nuclei of cells are at different levels, all cells are attached to basement membrane, but not all reach the apical surface
lines the airways of most upper respiratory tract, lines larger ducts of many glands
secretion and movement of mucus by ciliary action
Stratified squamous epithelium
several layers of cells, cubiodal to columnar shape in deep layers, squamous cells form the apical layer and several layers deep to it,cells from the basal layer replace surface cells as they are lost
keratinized form layer of skin, nonkeratinized lines mouth, pharynx, larynx
protection
stratified cubiodal epithelium
two or more layers of cells, apical layer are cubed-shaped
ducts of adult sweat glands and esophageal glands and part of male urethra
protection and limited secretion and absorption
stratified columnar epithelium
several layers of irregular shaped cells, only apical layer has columnar cells
lines part of urethra, large excretory ducts of some glands,ex:esphageal glands
protection and secretion
transitional epithelium
apperance is variable(transitional),shape of cells in apical layer ranges from squamous to cuboidal
lines urinary bladder and portions of ureters and urethra
permits distension
endocrine glands
secretory products(hormones) diffuse into blood after passing through interstitial fluid
pituitary gland at base of brain, pineal gland in brain
produces hormones that regulate various body activities
Exocrine gland
secretory products released into ducts
sweat, oil, and earwax glands of the skin: digestive glands such as salivary glands
produce substances such sweat, oil, earwax, saliva or digestive enzymes
