Ethnocentrism Definition: The belief that one's own culture is superior to all others. Ex. There are many examples in the movie; The cop, Sandra Bullock's character.

Stereotyping Definition:Categorizes and mentally organizes experiences, and guides behavior towards a particular group of people. Ex. The lady that was mocking the asian woman, saying that she couldn't see over the steering wheel indicating that all asians are short.

Nonverbal Communication Definition: Involves all those nonverbal stimuli in a communication setting that are generated by both thte source and his or her use of the environment and that have potential message value for the source or reveiver. Ex. Sandra Bullock's character grabbing her husbands arm in fear when the African American men walked by.

Racism Definition: The belief in the inherent superiourity of a particular race. Denies the basic equality of humankind and correlates ability with physical composition. Ex: The cop talking to the African American lady, and saying that there were 6 other white ment that were more qualified for her job.

Sexual Harassment Definition: Unwanted touching, usually in intimate places. Ex. The cop touching the African American woman in inappropriate places.

Unintentional Messages Definition: The sending of messages that you never intended to be part of the transaction. Ex. The black man who was pulled over by the cop, and was apologizing even though he did not do anything wrong in the first place. This unintentionally shows him as inferior.

Immigration Definition: The introduction of new people into a habitat or population. Ex: The Arab family

Bilingualism Definition: The ability to speak more than one language. Ex. The Arabic man. His native language is Arabic, but he also speaks English.

Clothing Definition: Can be used to convey economic status, education, social status, moral standards, athletic ability and/or interest, belief system, and level of sophistication. Ex. The Arabic woman's head wrap, the hispanic man wearing his pants around below his waist.

Tolerance Definition: Adaptation to the changing world and different cultures. Ex. Sanra Bullock's character coming to realization that her maid is a good person and you can tell she feels bad for the way she has treated her in the past.

Culture Shock Definition: Mental state that comes from the transition that occurs when you go from a familiar environment to an unfamiliar one and find that your old established patterns of behavior are ineffective. Ex. When Ludacris' character lets the new immigrants out of the back of the van and you can see that they do not have a clue how to act or what to do.
